Readium Mobile

Goals of Readium Mobile

Readium Mobile is a generic term for the Readium Swift Toolkit (which targets iOS apps) and the Readium Kotlin Toolkit (which targets Android apps). Both projects are now led by EDRLab.

The codebase is available in two GitHub repositories:

  • Readium Swift Toolkit source code is there.
  • Readium Kotlin Toolkit source code is there.

Both are provided with a BSD 3-Clause License, which makes them usable in commercial reading applications.

And both support the Readium LCP DRM as an option.

The Thorium iOS application is built around the Readium Swift toolkit, and is a reference application for this toolkit. A sibling Android application will be developed in 2027. Check https://www.thoriumreader.com for more details.

Such developments have been possible thanks to the financial involvement of the EDRLab members. If you are interested in adopting Readium Mobile in your application, please think about becoming a member of our association.

Evolutions

The Readium toolkits support all features expected from a modern reading application. These toolkits are still in active development, and new APIs and features are released each quarter. The release pages of both toolkits indicate which are the latest features.

The development being essentially agile, there is no strict roadmap. Features are discussed on the EDRLab Slack channels (for EDRLab members) and on the Readium Discord (for public discussions).
