You may be interested in a book the Coko Foundation just published, which literally
tells you how to design and build a publishing platform.

From Adam Hyde (who was speaker at the last DPUB Summit in Berlin):

“We are trying to remove all the mystique and give straight forward
advice on how to think about workflow, design your publishing platform,
and then build it. Many orgs have become lost in this process over the
years and there is no place for shared learnings and dialog about how to
approach this problem – until now.

There is a blog post about it here:
https://coko.foundation/sprinting-for-pubsweet/

and you can find the PDF here:
https://coko.foundation/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Coko_Pubsweet.pdf

We’ll make a proper home for the book shortly and put up the EPUB files
etc too…

The book, incidentally, was written using one of the platforms  –
Editoria – which was built using the principles in this book.

Anyways… we are a step closer to demystifying the problem of building
publishing platforms, and as a result one day I hope that instead of
renting an expensive big box expensive, you could get your local
javascript dev house down the road to inexpensively assemble a platform
that *exactly* meets your workflow requirements… that day is a step
closer with this book and I hope you enjoy it.”
